Alright, I’m packing up the computer and going home. Next entry from
home unless there is some kind of free wifi in SFO (which I don’t think
there is.)

I’m kind of torn here. While I’m quite satisfied with the trip and had
a really good time, I want to go home. But I also want to stay. I’ve
got a lot more things I want to do and places to see. What I won’t
miss are the Union Square crowds that make it nearly impossible to
move around. I don’t think I’ve been here in the XMas season before,
and this aspect is one that I won’t miss. There’s always a next
trip. I’ve already made it known that I want to come for the AGU
meeting next year. Professional conferences are fun, especially when
they aren’t your profession and they happen in fun city.

I forgot to mention that this guy I keep mentioning as my favorite
Atlanta act, Paul
Melancon
, is playing Live @ WREK tomorrow night. It will be from
10-11 PM EST Tuesday December 10 and you can hear it via MP3 streaming
– go to the WREK web page for that link. When I get home, I’ll put
up a link for the archive, which will be valid for one week after
which it becomes another show. We’re going to go down and sit in the
studio while he plays – one of the perqs of being a person of note at
the station. Should be good. I’m hoping he plays with the full band,
which makes his best songs more effectively power poppy. I can’t wait.

Dinner with Ray was really good. He took us to Scodini’s, this Italian
restaurant in North Beach that was fantastic. We got to talk and catch
up over the 10(?!) years since we last talked. He told us his tales
about New York City and San Francisco, and working in computer
graphics and now in motion picture special effects. We told him orr
tales of Atlanta and Lafayette LA and Portland OR, and my tales of woe
n the DRM industry and working for failed startups (he had a few of
those stories, too.) We closed the restaurant, sitting and talking and
eating. This was the best meal we’ve had in town, and with the best
company. It was a perfect cap to the trip.

Now we are just packing it up for the flight home. Getting the books
and comics stuffed into the luggage might be a challenge, but I’ll do
it. I half considered getting a box and mailing myself a package, but
I can work this. I hope
