I’m about ready to stop developing on my CRM newsfilter and just start
using it. The beautiful thing is that this converts mutt into my
newsreader, which I’m more familiar with. I use mutt every day to read
my mail, so I can get around faster in it. Tomorrow I’ll work on
making it a little more robust and write up directions on how to
install this filter. I’m pretty happy with this, writing something
useful in this odd language I saw for the first time last week.

My god I love this Flaming Lips album. The music and super slick
production are great, but I also find the lyrics quite involving and
at times emotionally moving. From “Fight Test” comes this bit, after a
song talking about making bad decisions, not fighting for the things
and people you should have fought for:

And I don’t know how a man decides what right for his
Own life – it’s all a mystery

Cause I’m a man not a boy and there are things
You can’t avoid you have to face them when you’re not prepared
To face them

It reads a little dryly on the page, but every time it gets to that
part of the song, I get a little misty.

OK, I have the CRM thing going full circle. I can use slrn to learn
things, my script will read newsgroups and run each article through
the filter and then save them in mbox format (I had to look up what
the hell mbox format was, but I did it). I can use mutt to read
the files, and by using the same keystrokes I can also train from
there as well. I have been doing this on groups with fairly small
numbers of articles for testing purposes. Tomorrow, I think I’ll go
for a few groups that I actually do read and train them for real. That
will give me a good test, since the final output is for it to find
articles I care about. Success is kind of relative, but there you have it.
