Evil Genius Chronicles Podcast for October 25 2015 – Discipline and Load

In this episode, I play a song by Dan Baird; I talk about the new episode of Mad at Dad; I discuss starting new podcast at the same time as beginning a new role at work; I relate a story about the highest load I ever took in college; do I speak for my company or not?; podcasting history is being removed from Wikipedia.

Living in the Future

I still find it tremendously cool to SSH into my server box to iptables drop a malicious IP from my phone in a park. It is also cool to be able to blog about it at the same time.

Homework of the Bowie Kind

Per my homework from the most recent episode of Mad at Dad, I’ll be listening to Bowie’s Diamond Dogs top to bottom with headphones. My assertion is that it isn’t better than the Mick Ronson era albums of the early 70s, Michael Butler’s is that it is superior. We shall see.

Nerds v. Sportsball

Dear nerd world, your insecurities are on display when you talk derisively about sports. Just calm down. Don’t start none, won’t be none.

High Rise

I am, however, really excited there is a film adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s High Rise. You can use these two points to calibrate my SF fandom.

Star Wars

I won’t be buying a Star Wars ticket. I’m not boycotting, I just don’t give a shit.

Zine Me Up

Hey Internet, does anyone know of a place where I can just send some money and get back a mixed selection of zines and/or minicomics? I’m interested in sampling some of each but starting from scratch title by title seems like an exhausting proposition.

New Role

Some of the aspects of my new role at work are so much like play that I find myself laughing out loud. It is ridiculous this is my job, but I will take it.

We Are Fine

Just to let people from around the country and the world know, we are fine. Our area had some places that were hit hard but our immediate neighborhood and our house were never in any danger. Within a half a mile or so there were some road closures as creeks overflowed onto roadways but it was not too bad for us. People in Charleston and Columbia had it much worse than us, and Little River to our north had 20 inches of rain in the worst day, washing away some road beds.

I appreciate the concern people have, but we are fine and always were. For us it was a minor inconvenience. I feel for the people for whom this was total devastation.

MAD-faces

Just for this first episode, both Butler and I are adding it to our regular show feeds. If you are an Evil Genius Chronicles listener or a Rock and Roll Geek listener and you want to hear more, you’ll need to go to the Mad at Dad website and subscribe. RSS links are up now, iTunes will be coming soon whenever they do whatever black magic voodoo it is that they do over there.

Other than me screwing up the original Blab and making us get a new link 3 minutes before the show, it went OK. There was a little weirdness that you always have from a new thing on a new system but it was fun. We plan on doing it again next week. If you want to get notified when we go live, you can go to Blab.IM and subscribe to our channel or whatever it is. It seems to work pretty well.

The audio player is below, it is included in the regular feed, and the video is embedded. What more do you want from me?

New Podcasts

MAD-faces

This week I defy the weather and local flooding to start not one but two new podcasts!

First, I will record tonight, Monday October 5th at 10:15 PM EDT with Michael Butler of the Rock and Roll Geek Show. It is called Mad at Dad, and it is the two of us talking about our lives, David Bowie and other matters of import. It will stream live via Blab.IM and you can come join us.

The second is called Milkfed Crime Blotter. It is a show devoted to comic book writers Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick (their company is Milkfed Criminal Masterminds, hence the weird name of the podcast.) I will have different co-hosts from show to show but for my first will be joined by Christiana Ellis. I am lucky for this, as she is a rock solid podcasting partner and I can worry about everything else without having to worry about my co-host. That show will also be streamed live, this one via Google Hangouts, and will record Thursday October 8th at 10 PM EDT.

Fun stuff, no? This makes two of the three potential projects I mentioned during the Dog Days of Podcasting actually coming to fruition. Just wait on that third, there is time.

Evil Genius Chronicles Podcast for October 4 2015 – Vague Notions Become Real

In this episode, I play a song from The Invalids; I talk about Merlin Mann on Reconcilable Differences and his odd belief that he is under pressure to be a sports fan; I point out my appearance on Rob Greenlee’s section of International Podcast Day on Blab.IM; I talk about my new podcast projects Mad at Dad and Milk Fed Crime Blotter; I mention a great term that Sean Cullen coined; I finish by talking about my experience at a Bernie Sanders rally.

This week’s large factual misstatement comes when I refer to the podcast to which Ken Kennedy was recommending me was the Incomparable. In fact, although John Siracusa is a regular guest on that podcast, it was Hypercritical that Ken thought I should listen to.

Questions for Podcasters

Hey fellow podcasters,

I am setting up two new podcast sites right now. I get to start over clean without all the cruft of my EGC site. If you had to do it all over again, what WordPress podcasting plugin would you use? I have tried a number of them over time and am not sure which one to start over with. Powerpress? Podcasting TSG? Podlove? I am using Podpress on EGC and it is fine but I many not know what I am missing.

Thanks friends.

More Punkin Comedy

This exchange happened during bath time:

Me: “Are you being a clown?”
Punkin: “If I’m being a clown, then you can’t frown!”
Me: “Now are you seussing me?”
Punkin: “If I’m seussing you, I’m goosing you!”
