The online comic The Spiders is a truly wonderful thing. Weird cyberpunk alternate present warfare in Afghanistan, with some rings of resonance with current events and enough difference to be abstract and distant. This is as good as many paper comics I’ve read in the last few years, and uses the medium quite well, including animated GIFs of superimposed frames for emphasis, fake webpages that fit into the narrative and other cool tricks of the form. What it most reminds me of is some of George Alec Effinger’s Budayeen fiction, specifically “The King of the Cyber Rifles”. Very good stuff.
