Falling Down

I’ve been playing iTunes on shuffle that last few days, and rediscovering songs I love but haven’t listened to lately. Right now, Tom Wait’s “Falling Down” is playing. This is one of those songs that raises the hair on the back of my neck, it is so full of emotion. Both the music and the lyrics get to me. Waits is the master of singing songs of people trapped in their own circumstances, slowly heading towards dissolution. These lyrics I find masterful:

I have come 500 miles just to see a halo
Come from St. Petersburg, Scarlett and me
Well I open my eyes, I was blind as can be
When you give a man luck, he must fall in the sea
And she wants you to steal and get caught
For she loves you for all that you are not
When you’re falling down, falling down
When you’re falling down, falling down, falling down
