I’ll admit that I am now sensitized to grit my teeth whenever I hear about these copyright suits filed by heirs, and today I see a prototypical example of why that is. On Boing Boing I saw this story about how Tolkien’s descendants are lawyering to limit the use of the word “shire”. Give me a goddamn break! As if these suits aren’t usually stupid enough, they are claiming that J. R. R. Tolkien invented a word that has been used for the last millenium. They have sent a letter to the owners of “shiremail.com” claiming that is Tolkien and Warner Brothers intellectual property.
We are way overdue for some backlash against these copyright bullies. What would be an effective way to strike back?
