Audioblog for Oct 20, 2004

Here is the Bittorrent link and direct MP3 download for the audioblog for October 20, 2004. I talk about the term “podcasting” and how I believe it is a large part of the recent explosion of interest despite some opposition to it; discuss several great podcasts that I have run across; give a description of my audio setup; and play a song from Paul Melancon.

Thanks for the plug, Dave! Now I know how you felt when you heard Steve Gillmor mention your work. I really appreciate it!

I had a few comments about your thoughts on the “podcast” term. I won’t take up space here, but they’re posted on my blog.

One thing I did want to mention was the relevance of “Hanged Man.” It’s a reference to the symbolic meaning of the tarot card of the same name, representing a kind of interpretation of Odin’s hanging from Yggdrasil. It’s someone who is suspended between worlds. I’m not tarot geek (don’t even own a deck), but if you’re curious there’s a great description at Aeclectic Tarot, my favorite quote of which is:

“For now, however, he just hangs, weightless as if underwater, observing, absorbing, seeing.”

    Thanks again for your time!

OK, I kinda agree with you. The term podcasting is a helluva lot sexier than audioblogging. But for the first week or so of its existence I thought it was exclusively for ipods. so thats my beef with the name. Once I looked into it a bit more, I was hooked. Now I spend every minute of my commute listening to you, curry, and the rest of the podcasting world. I hate the name, but we are stuck with it. I do think the name has something to do with the popularity. The fact that so many people have ipods, even though I refuse to buy one (no support for wma), has helped the podcast flourish.

    thanks for you show….

I agree with you that the term Podcasting is about the best that has been presented for this particular medium and has enough momentum behind and is sexy enough that it is gonna stick.

The only thing I find more annoying than those dissing the term podcasting or trying to insert their own term, are the twits who try to get Pod to stand for something (Personal Oblong Dildo, or some such shite)other than iPod, I believe its fairly obvious that the original applescript written to create this whole thing was designed for iTunes and the iPod. The fact that it can be it could/can be modified or adapted for use in other programs and platforms is just gravy.

keep up the great work and don’t let the Man get you down.

Interesting to hear some more comments about the term…

FYI, I’ve moved the podcast reviews to The New, New Podcast Review. Feel free to update your links.
    Thanks again!

Pod means a ‘vessel’. Something that holds. the name is relevant even if not understood by many.
