Happy New Year

Hey Everybody! Happy new year, you Gregorian calendar folks! As we turn the corner, let me quote my favorite song lyrics about this time of year:

and it’s been a long december and there’s reason to believe
maybe this year will be better than the last
i can’t remember all the times I tried to tell my myself
to hold on to these moments as they pass.

and it’s one more day up in the canyon
and it’s one more night in Hollywood
it’s been so long since i’ve seen the ocean…i guess i should.

That’s from Counting Crows, “A Long December”. I’m not a huge fan of them, but the optimistic melancholy of this song really gets me right there and always makes me mist up a little. In fact, I’m listening to it right now and misting up as I type this. The music and words combine to a sad package that always seems appropriate for closing off one year and moving on to the next.

Off we go into the future, scarred but smarter. 2005, ready or not here we come.

  1. Happy ought-5 to you as well. We enjoy your EGCasts and the weblog, and wish you and Darlene well.
And one of my personally favorite greatest quotes that I’m amazed that I remember, that I left on James’ site the other nite:
    Michelangelo:

“Lord, grant that I may always desire more than I accomplish.”
