Computer Geek Score

My computer geek score is greater than 91% of all people in the world! How do you compare? Click here to find out!

I think having a pretty wife and being asleep at 3 AM cost me a few points. I probably correctly answered all of the technical questions, and I know for sure I identified the photo of the computer because that was actually part of one of my grad school classes. If anything, I think this quiz is tilted towards old farts by asking them to identify ancient stuff. If I was a 16 year old hacker who lived and breathed computers, I wouldn’t have known half of this crap and wouldn’t have messed with C-64s or low baud modems. That I have is a quirk of my age more than anything else.

  1. C-64s?? Heavens, you kids today. My paltry 79 was a result of no TRS-80, with disk drives from Lobo Systems questions. It’s age bias, I tell ya’.

On the plus side, this quiz boosted me into the upper percentile of TWACs. Until PJ shows up, that is 😉

  2. Actually, you are probably right. It isn’t biased to old farts, it’s biased to people about my age plus or minus a few years. And damn it, it’s about time we got things biased to us. I should note that I played around the the TRS-80 color computer they used to have at the library in Norton, the Apple 2s and 3s they had at the high school and the C-64 a friend in Augusta had. I didn’t own a computer myself until 1992, my first one being a Mac LC 2.

  3. Wow, a color TRS-80. Did those have that state-of-the-art audio recorder mass storage device too? I’ve got a great story involving your dad, Rob Smiley, me, my TRS-80, a few beers, and a racing form that I’ve owed James for about 10 months now. Maybe I’ll have to blog it; lengthy emails require as much effort as blogging anyhow.

And you’re right about the age thing; every day, my hold on the torch that my generation must pass to yours gets weaker. It could have already been passed, and I just don’t realize it yet. Please don’t screw it up the way we did.

  4. Thanks a bunch Dave – apparently I need to Step. Away. From. The. Computer. 🙂 I just took the test. My wife is pretty as well, but I answered ‘smart’, as that’s what I love most about her. BTW, I’m an old fart as well.

  5. I scored 86, but I think it had more to do with apathy, I didn’t really care what the answer was. I used to care.

But I did notice a mistake on the quiz. It said “Compact Disk” not “Compact Disc”. I probably should have said Carrier Detect in light of that, but I haven’t used a modem in years.

  6. I got an 82, should I be proud? I have an old text book with that exact picture of the [removed by moderator]. I blame my pretty wife for not getting my score into the 90s.

  7. I got an 75, its good me thinks, only being 19 an all But stuff the 64 I want a commadore pluss 4 with mercanary and Tresure Isalan and Invaders. I Wish I was 6 again. lol (

  8. Scored 74, about right for me. Probably inflated by my heavy C64 experience back in the day (CPU and then disk drive both came home from the store on the back of my moped, all three earned myself, thankyouverymuch). I want to play Seven Cities Of Gold again SO BAD.

They’re right on the edge of cluelessness with that baud question, but I’m glad to see it in there. Few understand the difference between bits-per-sec and baud, and up through 1200 baud modems there was no difference …

  9. HA HA HA, Ken! Good one!

But you speak rightly, my friend. I say verily unto thee all, here gathered today, on this place and time… There’s no bigger TWAC than I!

And by the way, I got a 98, Computer God, even though I answered I would be asleep at 3 am on Saturdays and weeknights (maybe that’s where the 2% went?)

Oh, and I didn’t know who the guy in the picture was, but I guessed between [edited by moderator]. I later (i.e. after I got my schore) Googled each name, and I got the answer right! That was pure luck. I’d willingly forfeit that point.

  10. Oops, I hope there’s a different picture on that question and different possible answers when different people play, cuz I think I just gave an answer away.

Sorry if I made you go edit that out, Dave!
