EGC Podcast Schedule to Record 8:30 PM EDT, April 6

Once again, I’m going to continue the experiment of recording my podcast and streaming. Tonight at 8:30 PM EDT I’ll be recording and streaming it live via Ustream. If you want to see a Kindle demonstrated, you can see it here. I’ll also once again try the experiment of posting with a ustream window embedded in it a few minutes before I start streaming.

You can always find out about things like this by subscribing to my FriendFeed account. That’s where the timely stuff lives.

Dollhouse Paper Dolls

I’m weird about Joss Whedon. I loved Serenity/Firefly and I really don’t like Buffy/Angel. I did enjoy Dr Horrible, so if that’s the tie breaker then I’m willing to give him a little more slack. When Dollhouse hits TV, I’ll watch it and see how I like it. I did decide to be a geek and print out the Dollhouse paper dolls that are up so far. I don’t know why, I’m just feeling nerdy. If I end up liking Dollhouse then maybe I’ll say that I’m a Whedon fan and the Buffyverse is an anomaly.

Bosniaks

The fact that Joe Biden knew that “Bosniaks” is the proper term when I thought he was mispeaking proves that he knows a hell of a lot more about the Balkans than I do. However, Cokie Roberts equally did not know that but she thinks she’s correct. Will Cokie apologize for her counter-gaffe? One doubts. Looks like Cokie has tipped her hand a little too far here.

Off To Dragon*Con

This afternoon I’ll be making the drive from Myrtle Beach to Atlanta for Dragon*Con. My deep hope is to get registered tonight so that I do not have to mess with that at all on Friday. I have a live taping of Reality Break with Mur Lafferty at 10 PM Friday night and my talk on “Why Podcasting Matters” at 8:30 PM on Sunday night. Right now it looks like Saturday will be my “me” day, the day where I take my want lists and dig through long boxes looking for elusive back issues. I have learned that even when I have a professional agenda, it is nice to carve out a little chunk of time to be a fanboy. It’s why I got involved in all this in the first place.

I have a few Reality Break interviews scheduled through the con. I might also be doing some pickup interviews, either for Reality Break or EGC podcast. I’ll have my trusty Marantz with me most of the time. It’s possible I’ll be doing some stuff for the offical Dragon*Con podcast but I’m not sure on that. I’m up for anything.

One of the things that just happened yesterday is that I volunteered to be Darusha Wehm’s proxy at the Parsec awards. If her podcast of Beautiful Red wins, I’ll accept her award and either read her statement or put her on speakerphone at the mic. The latter is of course preferred.

All in all it should be a fun time. If you are at the con, come to one of my program events or catch me in the hall or pick up some of my swag from the groaning giveaway table. It’ll be a fun time and I hope to see you there, all of you.

Tan Tan Noodles Simple Spam Filter for WordPress

I’m experimenting with a new feature on the site that puts in a second level of protection on comment spam. It’s this WordPress plugin from Tan Tan Noodles (your guess is as good as mine on the name.) The thing I like best is the idea that should a legitamite comment by a real person get flagged as spam, they have a second chance to enter the captcha. Once in a very blue moon I will get a legitamite comment trapped but it is really prohibitive to go and look for comments in the Akismet trap page. Right now, I have 1600 in there from the last 14 days. Life is too short to weed through that.

If folks could do me a favor and just leave a test comment on this post, I’d appreciate it. Upgrading to WordPress 2.5 broke comments and I’d like to not do that again. Thanks!

AmigoFish Back Up

AmigoFish has returned from the dead as of this morning. I checked it out and it seemed to be fine but let me know if you use it and see any issues. I have my issues with The Planet but being able to recover within 36 hours from having a building in their hosting facility explode is pretty impressive.

I apologize for the downtime.

Migration Remnants

I think the last of my issues from migrating web hosts is now done. I had a few DynDNS domains that I really only use to accept email. I had a Rube Goldberg style setup on Dreamhost that kept the mail flowing but it isn’t possible to do with HostGator. I made a failed attempt to set up these domains to use Google apps but since a free DynDNS domain doesn’t have a lot of flexibility I couldn’t make it work. It might not be impossible but I couldn’t do it. I gave up and just pointed it all to my home Linux box. That’s not as reliable as I’d like but screw it, it’s done now.

I sure hope I am done with this now. Moving webhosts, particularly when you have a lot of odd configurations and freaky domains, sucks almost as much as moving houses.
